Doc Rivers’ admission that he’s tinkering with the starting lineup has been the focal point of Celtics news this week. It started with talk that Jared Sullinger could see time with the starters and Brandon Bass aligning with the second unit.
After today’s practice, Bass didn’t want to elaborate on the possibility:
Bass on potentially coming off of the bench this season: “I have no comment on that question. No comment. We’re going to keep getting better every day. We have to get better as a team, and I think Doc will make the best decision for the team.”
A “no comment” generally comes with some level of frustration, but I’m not willing to go that far with Bass. I don’t expect a professional athlete to be thrilled about losing a starting job. It’s just a matter of how far he’ll take his unhappiness (see Ray Allen, 2012).
The Celtics play the Knicks Saturday night in Hartford. Doc’s made it clear this game is about Boston and not NY:
“It’s preseason. I don’t think we’ve mentioned the Knicks one time,” said Rivers. “We’ll talk about them a little bit tomorrow, since we’re playing them. But, I’m more worried about us. If this was a regular season game, obviously today we would have went over their sets and all that, but this is preseason, so we’re worried about us right now.”
No one outside of NY mentions the Knicks, either. Except for the occasional national blowhard analyst. The Knicks are the definition of irrelevant.
