On Monday of this week, Phillies relief pitcher Antonio Bastardo was suspended for the remainder of the 2013 regular season for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal. Bastardo is one of 13 players to be suspended for their involvement. The other notable players suspended are the Texas Rangers’ Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta of the Detroit Tigers and the most notable player of the 13, the New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez. All of the players besides Rodriguez are suspended throughout the rest of this regular season. Rodriguez is said to be suspended for the rest of this and next season, but he is appealing the suspension and is allowed to play while the appeal process is being taken care of.
Bastardo was having a pretty impressive year before being suspended. In 48 appearances, he had a 3-2 record with an impressive 2.32 earned run average. He was one of the few Phillies relief pitchers that were actually having a good season. Bastardo’s future with the team is not very clear. No one really knows if Bastardo’s PED use was the reason that he pitched well this season, so keeping him next year will be a tough decision for management.
