As you may have noticed, I have not written a word about beach volleyball in almost an entire year. It’s been half-intentional, half-not. At the beginning of last beach season, I had a lot more time on my hands than I do now. A lot more. Enough that I was able to watch and write up every day of each major FIVB tournament.
I’d still like to do that, but I simply can’t right now. It’s beyond the realm of possibility. It’s not even about my much-maligned (and cliché at this rate) home internet connection, though it remains something of an issue. No, I’m just not available to watch every day.
And I considered dropping coverage because of it, but I’m not going to. I’ve instead cleared my schedule for championship-Sunday of each major event, and I’ll at minimum be able to cover those days. Unfortunately, not all the schedules are alike. Some events, Sunday is just men’s finals, some it’s both genders, some it’s semis and finals.
The season starts this week in China with the Fuzhou Open…..which I may not cover. Gotta be honest — the time difference to China is an absolute pain in the ass, just like any of the players (and in particular Ryan Doherty) would tell you. Championship Sunday in Fuzhou, and a week hence in Shanghai for the more important Shanghai Grand Slam, will if I recall correctly happen mid-evening Saturday for me. So we’ll see. I’ve still got a lot to learn about beach, and I hope I’ll be able to do some of that this season.
