It was a good and bad night for Cincinnati athletics. Late game heroics balanced out and unfortunately caught up to the basketball team.
The football team finished the regular season 10-3 with a 48-34 win over Duke in the Belk Bowl. The game had a wild finish. Duke was driving down the field to win the game with around a minute left. Brandon Mills' back caused a fumble when the Duke running back ran into it. Brendon Kay hit Travis Kelce for an 83 yard TD on the ensuing drive to put Cincinnati ahead. The Bearcats added an insurance score when Nick Temple picked off a pass and ran 55 yards for the score. Shit was bananas as the kids say.
Brendon Kay threw for 322 yards and 4 TDs. George Winn ran for 129 yards and a TD. Travis Kelce had 123 receiving yards and Anthony McClung had 111 receiving yards to be the first duo to pull that off this season. I think. McClung looked especially electric. Nick Temple and Arryn Chenault had big INTs. The defense forced 2 fumbles inside the 10 that really were the difference in the game. There will be many more happy words about this tomorrow.
As for the basketball team, they took their first loss of the season tonight. They fell 55-54 to New Mexico. The last play of the game saw Sean Kilpatrick inbound the ball to Cheikh Mbodj, who set a screen for the inbounder. That ended up with the center in SK's face for the last shot. He had it blocked. UC lost. It was very disappointing. I only saw the last minute so I can't comment on the rest of the game. UC made more 3s than they did 2s. They only attempted 4 free throws. Right there are 2 reasons for losing basketball games.
Here are the box scores for both games.
