As of now, 18 Olympians of the 42 sports representing have been determined by trial play. Of the 18, one, Mariel Zagunis, hails from pleasant Beaverton, Oregon. Zagunis, daughter of 2 former Olympic rowers (Montreal), is the most decorated fencer in U.S. history, and sponsored by local Nike.

Upon commencement of play in Rio de Janeiro in August, Zagunis will be the first fencer to compete in 4 consecutive Olympics since Harriet King in 1972. Not only did she receive a team bronze in London, she bore the United States flag at Opening Ceremonies; the saberist achieved individual golds in Athens and Beijing.

Fencers compete with either a Foil, Epee, or Saber. Athens was the first Olympics to feature a Women’s Saber event.

Zagunis has mastered the Saber–a slashing cavalry sword. It is 35 inches in length, and weighs less than a pound.
