Beckett Falters and Sox Fall to Yanks

The Red Sox bats finally showed up, but unfortunately it would be at the same time that Beckett had one of the worst first innings of his career and a hiccup by the bullpen to allow the Yanks to take the first game of the series.

Josh Beckett was just dreadful in the first inning.  Horrible.  Bad.  No good.  Beckett gave up 3 runs before getting a single out.  By the end of the 1st, Beckett allowed 5 runs to score.  Beckett would allow another run to score in the 2nd with a ground out to ARod.  However, after that Beckett settled down for the next 3 innings.  Unfortunately, the bad first inning and the tons of pitches it took him to get through it meant that he wouldn’t go any further than that.

Shockingly, when Beckett left the mound he was in line for a win.  The Sox bats returned the favor to Kuroda and scored five runs off of him in the bottom of the 1st inning.  Kalish scored Nava on a RBI sac fly to score the first run.  Gonzo hit an RBI double to score Papi for the 2nd run.  The final 3 runs were scored by a HR by Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  Salty hit his 17th HR of the season which is a season high for him and it is before the All Star Break.  Game tied 5-5.  The Sox tied the game again in the bottom of the 2nd with an RBI single to Papi to score Nava.  Sox 6-6.  The Sox would get the go ahead run in the 5th with an RBI single from call-up Mauro Gomez.  Sox 7-6.

Unfortunately the bullpen would not hold the lead for the Sox.  Matt Albers came out and pitched a scoreless 6th inning with the help of an inning ending double play.  Miller came on to start the 7th.  He gave up a walk and a hit and then got a strikeout for the first out.  Bobby V took Miller out of the game and Padilla was in to face his old nemesis Teixeira.  Teixeira won on this day and hit a 2 run RBI triple to give the Yanks a 8-7 lead. Padilla would give up an RBI double to give the Yanks a 9-7 lead.  Scott Atchison was in the game and he gave up an RBI single to bring the lead up to 10-7.  Not exactly what Bobby V had in mind.

Cody Ross would add one more run for the Sox with a leadoff HR in the bottom of the 7th, however that would be the only run the Sox would get against the Yankees bullpen.  The Sox had more chances in both the 7th and 8th innings, but were unable to take advantage.  Soriano came out with 2 outs in the 8th and got a 4 out save for the Yankees.

Both teams used a lot of their bullpen tonight and are headed into a doubleheader tomorrow.  It should be interesting.
