Beckett Pitches First No Hitter of 2014

While the Sox were proceeding to lose their 10th straight game, former Sox ace Josh Beckett was pitching the game of his life in Philadephia.  I flipped over to the Dodgers game during the 6th inning as Beckett was in the middle of his no hitter attempt.  By the end of the 7th inning Beckett still had the no hitter intact and was sitting at 100 pitches.  Beckett had an efficient 8th inning and then came to the mound for the 9th needing 3 outs to accomplish something that he had never been able to do before.

Beckett got a pop up and a groundout and then needed just one more out to finish off the no hitter.  Beckett seemed to be pitching on fumes and walked Jimmy Rollins.  Beckett got to a 3-2 count against Chase Utley and got him out on a called strike three.  Beckett threw a career high 128 pitches and got to celebrate with his team.  What is even more remarkable about Beckett’s no hitter is that this time last year his career was all but over when he was experiencing numbness in his pitching hand.  Beckett had season ending nerve surgery in 2013 and has worked to come back and be a productive member of the Dodgers rotation.  The no hitter has to be a pretty amazing cherry on the top of that story.

Congrats to Josh Beckett!
