Last night, Adrian Beltre got ejected as he was taking the field on the 3rd inning. We all assumed that he continued to run his mouth about arguing balls and strikes. Nope. Not what went down. Beltre was ejected for NOT talking to Dan Bellino…a minor league umpire called up to cover umpire vacations. It seems that Beltre and Felix, who are long time friends from their days with the Mariners…had a little bet going on. Felix said he was gonna strike Beltre out three times….Beltre said he was going to take Felix yard. As Beltre was taking the field, he told Felix that next time he was going to take the ball out over the Monster, en espanol…and then Bellino started to say somethign to Beltre, Beltre turned and said he was not talking to him, he was talking to Felix. Ejected. Really? Ridiculous. Tito then got ejected when he couldn’t get Bellino to answer as to why he was ejected….and Tito joked that he started swearing and that probably was not the most helpful response. And, Beltre’s account was verified by Kevin Cash and Felix Hernandez. There aren’t many times when a player on the other team steps up and backs up the story of someone being ejected.
I agree with Peter Gammons, something needs to be done about the umps. Their egos are effecting games. Not cool.
Here is Beltre describing what happened:
