Ben Cherington is taking a wait and see approach to the Hot Stove, and so far fans are seeing players sign elsewhere. The Red Sox need at least one more solid starter but Cherington said they may be taking a pass on the Buehrle and C.J. Wilson:
“You never say never, but I think it’s more likely we’ll be pursuing other options. We always want to stay involved to the extent we have the latest information and keep your options open because you never know what may come your way and how that may change things. I would say it’s less likely we’ll be involved in those top tier guys as relative to the past.”
The wait and see attitude caused them to lose out on Papelbon, Heath Bell, and Matt Capps as potential closers. Cherington may be taking a different approach than Theo did and try to jump in at the last moment or just use the guys they have and hope Jenks is ready to contribute.
Aside from hiring a new manager, the Red Sox have done nothing to improve the team that came in third in the A.L. East last season. The negotiations with Big Papi seem to be going well and it is likely he will accept a two-year deal if he does not go after the bigger annual salary by accepting arbitration.
