Berra, Mantle Are Both Winners!

While Hanna-Barbera has maintained that their popular cartoon character Yogi Bear is not named after the popular New York Yankees catcher…”Yogi Berra” the racehorse clearly is.

Matter of fact, the three-year-old colt is actually owned by Jessica Steinbrenner, the daughter of the late Yankees owner, and the man who hired Berra to manage the team back in 1984, George Steinbrenner.

Now, if all of that sounds familiar…it’s because I wrote the exact same thing when Yogi Berra the horse made his debut at Tampa Bay Downs exactly ten months ago. So why is this a thing again?  Well, much like that debut back in February, the Florida-bred horse ran a clean race on Sunday and won. That’s right, Yogi Berra is now two-for-two in his races. Suffice it to say, the 89-year-old Hall of Fame catcher was ecstatic.

In case you were wondering, Yogi Berra went into the race at 7-2 odds and paid $9.40 to win. But get this, also racing on Sunday in Tampa…a 4-year-old gelding named Mecke Mantle.

Mecke Mantle is close enough in name to Berra’s longtime New York Yankees Mickey Mantle to mentioned, right? Would it help if I told you that Mecke Mantle won its race as well?!?

I can’t wait to see who ends up racing next!
