Ah yes, we are finally in October. What better way to ring in the new month than with Big East rankings? I can’t think of a better one either.
Like that West Virginia player, I’m astonished about how bad the Big East has been non conference. Hopefully this means once things heat up in conference, the games will be good. They could be shit, but let’s hope for good.
1) West Virginia Mountaineers 3-1. West Virginia went down in Baton Rouge to an LSU team that could barely play offense 20-14. WVU held LSU to 230 yards, but got only 177. Geno Smith, 14-29-119-2 TDs-1 INT, was horrible. Noel Devine, 14-37, had nowhere to run. Jock Sanders had 47 receiving yards and a TD as a bright spot. WVU’s offense was dominated badly. Geno and co need to bounce back if they are going to run roughshot over the Big East.
2) Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2-1. Rutgers lost to North Carolina 17-13, but remain second. They held Tyler Yates to 204 yards passing, and UNC to under 300. The problem is their offense. Specifically, the offense is terrible. Rutgers held the ball nearly 36 minutes and averaged 4.9 a pass and 2.4 a run. Tom Savage was not good, going 16-29-150-2 INTs. Mohammed Sanu continues to be the offense, with 9-74 receiving, 15-41-1 TD rushing, and going 1-1, 7 yards throwing. Rutgers had 72 penalty yards to add to the badness.
3) Syracuse Orange 3-1. Syracuse has two wins against division 2, or FCS, schools that only count for 1 win. Meaning they have to win 7 to be bowl eligible. Their record is completely artificial, but since everyone else isn’t winning, and they are taking care of business, they are number 3. They demolished Colgate 42-7. As Hoya Suxa said, Delone Carter put an Al Bundy on the Raiders with 4 TDs to go along with 172 yards. Ryan Nassib was 8-15-169-1 TD. Van Chew and Antwon Bailey both had 68 receiving yards, but Bailey caught a TD. The Orange racked up 437 yards, but gave up 368.
4) Connecticut Huskies 2-2. The Huskies beat down Buffalo 45-21, but they are ranked here because Cody Endres is coming back to be the QB. He has to be better than Zach Frasier. He was 7-11-152-2 TDs part time. Robbie Frey had 13-112-1 TD on the ground. Michael Smith had a huge day receiving, 4-130-1 TD. Kashif Moore had 70 yards as well. Jerome Junior had 2 INTs.
5) Cincinnati Bearcats 1-3. Yeah, yeah, they are 1-3, but they played Oklahoma extraordinarily well, and could have won. They have more going for them then the other three teams at the moment.
6) South Florida Bulls 2-1. The Bulls beat Western Kentucky 24-12 in what felt like a loss. The Bulls were outgained 313-284. BJ Daniels was 7-11-57-1 INT, but ran for 30 yards and a TD. The Bulls ran for 226, with Demetris Murray going for 15-115, and Moise Plancher 17-79-1 TD. Not pretty.
7) Louisville Cardinals 1-2. Louisville didn’t play last week, but they suffered a huge loss when senior WR Doug Beaumont got injured and is out indefinitely. He was their best receiver, 16-244-1 TD, and a senior stabilizer for the offense. The Cardinals offense isn’t great, and they face a tough road with him out.
8) Pittsburgh Panthers 1-2. Pitt’s 31-3 beatdown at the hands of Miami was embarrassing. The Hurricanes didn’t play very well, and still blew the Panthers away. The offense is the killer, with only 232 yards. Tino Sunseri was 8-15-61 before he was pulled for Pat Bostick, who was no better, 5-9-43-2 INTs. Ray Graham had himself a day, with 14-100 on the ground, and 3-41 in the air. Dion Lewis has been very ineffective, just 12-41 against Miami, and has 143 yards on 3 yards a carry this season.
