Big Papi Skips Game to Attend Daughter’s Graduation

When the Boston Red Sox took the field for the first game of a double header against the Baltimore Orioles Saturday…a familiar face was absent from the team’s lineup.

Sure, David Ortiz was around for the nightcap, but where was he for the early tilt?  Was he hurt?  Was he on some sort of double secret probation initiated by manager John Farrell?!?

Nope.

“He’s returning from a family commitment that’s been scheduled for quite some time in the Dominican [Republic],” Farrell told reporters. “He was going to miss yesterday’s game. It just happens that [it was] the first game of today.”

What’s that family commitment you ask? This.

That’s right, Ortiz, who is, by far, not the oldest Major Leaguer out there, has a daughter old enough to graduate high school.  Or, to put it another way, the 38-year-old’s daughter Jessica is just a couple years younger than Rougned Odor, the starting second baseman for the Texas Rangers.

As mentioned, “Big Papi” showed up for game two…going one-for-three in the 7-4 loss.
