Bills Sniffing Around Vick?

You would of thought Russ Brandon’s statement that the Bills weren’t interested in Mike Vick would close the door on those rumors, well think again. On Monday, Peter King (Roscoe Parrish’s biggest fan) wrote on his SI.com column that the Bills should pursue Vick.

“I think, the more I watch football this summer, Vick’s new team should be the Bills. Nothing against Trent Edwards. I just think the Bills are in it to win it this year. “

Then yesterday, NFL.com writer Jason La Confara (Nice f$%ken name, bro) added the Bills to the Vick watch list. His reasoning was simple.

The Bills have been looking around for a backup quarterbacks, according to sources. Owner Ralph Wilson Jr. has talked openly about how signing [Terrell Owens] was done at least in part to raise the profile of the small-market club. Again, Vick would be out of the spotlight, depending on how Trent Edwards performs. [Vick] might have a shot to start down the road, and the team continues to look at ways to get more diverse on offense and spread teams more.

And then today, Donte Whitner decided to help a brother out by extending this olive branch (or dog bone) to Vick via Twitter.

“I’d love to have Mike Vick as a teamate! The guy is unbelievable….he made a mistake but haven’t we all?!”

As blogged earlier, I made my opinion known about Vick coming to Buffalo. As far as Whitner’s opinion goes, he’s just doing what all the NFL players have said when asked about Vick. Dude made a mistake and he’d be a great teammate. At this point, Trent Edwards would say the same thing. There’s a code of ethics among NFL players when it comes to one of their own being scrutinized by the media and outside outlets. Saying he doesn’t want Vick on the team would just start up another controversy staring Donte Whitner.

Peter King’s reasoning that Ralph Wilson wants to win now is something that I just don’t buy. If the Bills were in a win at all costs mode, then they would of redid Jason Peters deal and signed a legit weakside linebacker. Not to mention people keep forgetting that Vick was a very average QB before serving hard time. So lets hold the Wilson is like Steinbrenner talk.

La Confara makes a decent point on the Bills trying to create a buzz with the signing of Owens, and by adding Vick would skyrocket the profile of the team. But the team’s profile is at a 6-year high and why waste another PR move when you already have Owens there. I’ll say this, if the Bills never signed Owens, I think Mike Vick would be in a Bills uniform at this very moment in order to create a buzz. And I’ll even go further, if Edwards struggles this year and Owens leaves, look for the Bills to go after Vick next offseason in order to get the spotlight back.
