The Phillies kept the winning streak going on Thursday night as they got offense from the long ball. The scoring did not start until the second inning, when Phillies first baseman Ty Wigginton popped a solo home run to give the Phils a 1-0 lead. Then, the Twins came back in the bottom of the second inning and hit their own solo home run courtesy of third baseman Trevor Plouffe, it was his 12th home run of the season and the Twins only run of the game, as Phillies starting pitcher Joe Blanton was dominate.
Then in the fourth inning, Jim Thome came up to the plate and you know what happened. He crushed a three run home run to right field, giving him this third home run of the season and his 607th of his career. Thome has come alive during these past two interleague series and he is proving that maybe he deserves more playing time at first base or even more pinch hitting opportunities. The Phils would then score two more runs in the eighth and ninth innings to win the game 6-1 and take two of three from the Twins.
Joe Blanton pitched a good game and we saw good Joe and not bad Joe. Blanton, on Thursday night pitched a complete game, gave up seven hits and only one earned run, and finally struck out seven. The Phillies record now stands at (31-34) and they will take their two game winning streak to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays. Tonight, on the mound for the Phillies it will be Vance Worley (3-2, 3.00 ERA) and on the mound for the Blue Jays it will be Drew Hutchison (5-3, 4.66 ERA). The Blue Jays record stands at (31-32). First pitch is at 7:07 pm.
