Bloguin Heisman Poll: It’s a quarterback’s world

chavez_duddy_04

Not much has changed this week in my look at the Heisman picture. One of my top players for consideration was on a bye week but after getting a chance to talk to him on a conference call Monday afternoon he was more than worthy of staying put in my top three. After all, this is based on an entire workload and not just a weekly update, so keep that in mind as well.

The guys from College Football Zealots continue to manage the Bloguin Heisman Poll, which is being hosted over on Crystal Ball Run.

1. QB Andrew Luck, Stanford

Luck passed for 370 yards and three touchdowns as Stanford crushed Colorado over the weekend. To date Luck has passed for more yards, one more touchdown, and has a higher completion percentage than he did a year ago at this point in the season, although as somebody pointed out to me (and I apologize for forgetting who), he also played a tougher schedule at the start of last season, including games against Notre Dame, Oregon and USC. So far this season Stanford’s toughest game has come against Arizona, and the Wildcats just fired Mike Stoops with a 1-5 record.

2. QB Russell Wilson, Wisconsin

Wisconsin was on a bye week after the big win against Nebraska. Wisconsin has taken the time to start up their Heisman push for Wilson by setting up a weekly conference call with the quarterback. Every Monday he will meet with the media and conduct a separate conference call briefly. Bret Bielema may not believe in Heisman campaigns in this day and age, but that is clearly what Wisconsin is organizing, and that is well deserved.

Wilson says it is an honor to be discussed as a Heisman candidate because it is every player’s personal goal, but he notes that it is more a reflection on the entire team. The kid gets it and is well grounded, that is for sure.

3. QB Kellen Moore, Boise State

Boise State’s trusty quarterback connected on 23 of his 32 pass attempts for 254 yards and a trio of touchdowns. If those numbers seem kind of ordinary for Moore, I don’t blame you. But consider the fact that Moore attempted just two passes in the second half, and completed each of them, before being replaced by back-up Joe Southwick and these numbers look much more impressive, don’t they?

Next up for Moore is life in the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos play their first MWC game this weekend against Colorado State.

Moore was also the top player on my Detmer Award ballot on No 2-Minute Warning this week.

Others on the radar: QB Robert Griffin III (Baylor), RB Trent Richardson (Alabama), QB Denard Robinson (Michigan), QB Landry Jones (Oklahoma), RB LaMichael James (Oregon), RB Marcus Lattimore (South Carolina)
