In a move that will surely be forgotten within the next month or so, the Blue Jackets acquired Ryan Stanton from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Cody Goloubef. Goloubef has been with the Blue Jackets since the beginning of his career and it has been a bit of a roller coaster. It currently had him playing in the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters. What is next for the Blue Jackets? Will Stanton make an impact with the big club?
Goloubef was a mobile, right handed defender that could be easily placed anywhere in the lineup. He had a couple of good shot differential seasons but the problem came from consistency. When he finally got an opportunity as of late, injuries seemed to step in the way. While he put up numbers that rivaled a couple of his teammates, it just wasn’t in the cards for him.
Stanton, much like Goloubef, has had some solid seasons in the NHL. He played on some good teams and played well enough to stay in the NHL for a couple seasons. Most of his NHL time was with the Vancouver Canucks, and after leaving the team he hasn’t been able to find his footing. In the Capitals organization last season, he played with the Hershey Bears against the Lake Erie Monsters in the Calder Cup final.
Both players probably needed a change of scenery to get back on track. Goloubef provided good depth for the Jackets, especially on the right side where they are pretty weak after Seth Jones. Stanton will likely not see time in the NHL, destined to be a part of the leadership core in Cleveland. The move resets the Monsters defense, one that is well deserved given the team’s poor start. It remains to be seen how it will pan out, but you can’t say they haven’t made an attempt shake things up.
