Blue Jackets sign trio of players to one-year, two-way deals

It had been a couple of days since we had any good Blue Jackets news, right? So during the hot, dreary days of summer, some news of a game played on ice is a welcome sight to see. The Jackets announced that they signed Alex Broadhurst, Scott Harrington and TJ Tynan. All three of them signed one-year, two-way deals. According to prior reports, none had applied for arbitration.

Broadhurst, 23, had an okay year with the Monsters as he scored 36 points in 60 games. During the Monsters’ Calder Cup playoff run, Broadhurst scored 12 points in 17 games. Since coming into the AHL, his scoring rate has gone down slightly each year. It begs the question, has his growth stagnated? This could be a make or break year for him as he is beginning to get more competition down in Lake Erie.

Harrington, also 23, was one of the most recent Blue Jackets news makers as he was acquired in a trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Harrington has had pedestrian numbers thus far as he oscillated back and forth between the Marlies and the Leafs last year. His potential is still unknown as he comes in with a great pedigree with very little to show for it. Will he be able to compete for a roster spot on the Blue Jackets come next year or will he continue to be a fringe player?

Tynan, 24, has become a pillar of consistency for the Jackets as he had back to back 40+ point seasons. The diminutive center out of Notre Dame has beaten the odds every place he has been as a player. After leading the Monsters in assists last year, he disappeared during their Calder Cup run with six points in seventeen games. Did he hit a wall or was it a type of hockey that he wasn’t accustom to?  He has room to improve but it will be tough for him to reach the point of being an NHLer. Much like the other two players he signed with, he is going to need a strong season to stick around after this year.

The news isn’t enough to draw much attention to the Blue Jackets during the summer, nonetheless, these are some good depth signings and should provide value this upcoming year.
