Blues acquire Anders Nilsson from the Oilers

The Blues made a rather insignificant, potentially unneccessary trade on Saturday morning by acquiring goaltender Anders Nilsson from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for goaltender Niklas Lundstrom and a 2016 fifth-round draft pick.

The trade was made by the Blues for one simple reason: NHL experience. Nilsson has NHL experience while the team’s current backup options behind Jake Allen (Phoenix Copley and Jordan Binnington) do not. Allen is coming off an injury and realistically can’t start every game down the stretch like Brian Elliott did while Allen was out, so the Blues made a move to grab a netminder with some sort of experience at the NHL level.

The Blues initially reported that their new goalie will report to the AHL, but he was later called up after the team’s blowout loss to the Predators.

Nilsson will be a restricted free agent following the 2015-16 season.
