The St. Louis Blues are a team without a first-round pick in the upcoming NHL Draft. The club shipped their pick over to the Buffalo Sabres in the Ryan Miller trade. The Sabres then sent the pick over to the Winnipeg Jets, but the fact of the matter is that the Blues are lacking a first-round pick. That’s unfortunate as the draft this season is loaded with talent which should fill the first round. As a result, the Blues are reportedly looking into acquiring a first-round selection.
Via Jeremy Rutherford:
“I asked Armstrong this question today and he said the Blues do have interest in trading into the first round. They’ve had some conversations and they’re checking the pulse of some teams. Will it happen? Who knows? But this is a fairly deep draft, especially at forward and defense. The Blues seem to be set in the prospect department on defense with Lindbohm, Edmundson, Parayko, Vannelli, Schmaltz, etc. So I would guess that if the Blues have some interest in trading into the first round, they’ve probably got their eye on a forward who can add to the group of Rattie, Fabbri and Barbashev.”
Having an interest may not mean much, but it’s noteworthy the Blues admitted they’re checking in with other teams about the possibility of securing a first-round pick. A trade for a first-round pick isn’t the kind of trade Blues fans will want as it won’t bring an immediate return, but it’ll require the Blues to part with a significant asset due to the talent available in this year’s draft.
