If you haven’t been on Twitter since Thursday evening, you may be unaware of the anger flooding in the direction of the Blues. When the team scored their second goal in preseason action against the Minnesota Wild, the familiar goal song of “When The Saints Go Marching In” played on the arena’s organ was missing. In its place was a song. An average, meaningless song in place of the traditional organ.
Was the organist in the restroom? What gives? The Blues scored a couple more goals and the organ was back in place. What happened?
According to a source in the organization (this is a real person, not an Eklund style source – They posted on Twitter but quickly deleted the Tweet to protect their job), the Blues are debating changing their goal song. They’ve discussed ditching the iconic organ for something you may hear in any other arena in the country. Basically, they’re debating abandoning what sets them apart in favor of copying what mostly everyone else does. Foolish, right?
Blues fans caught on and took to Twitter to vent their frustrations. The hashtag #SaveTheOrgan was born and it picked up steam not only in St. Louis, but across North America as organ enthusiasts and hockey traditionalists rallied behind the old goal song.
Considering the Blues recently moved away from their old goal lights to LED rope-style lights, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they’re tinkering in other places. Hands off, Blues. The organ goal song is a tradition you shouldn’t be touching.
Tweet the St. Louis Blues and tell them you don’t want a new goal song. #SaveTheOrgan! While you’re at it, show the team’s organist Jeremy Boyer some love too.
