Though the end result in the St. Louis Blues’ 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers in their opener was disappointing, the ratings for the first game of 2014-15 were a huge success. Fox Sports Midwest announced that the game posted the highest ratings for an opener airing on FSMW. In its 19th year of covering the Blues, FSMW saw a 6.4 household rating for the Blues and Rangers, a mark which bested the previous high of 6.0 from the 2012-13 opener following the lockout.

Compared to last year, the 2014-15 opener was up 32%.

What drew the surge in ratings? Aside from the obvious stories including the return of hockey and the debut of Paul Stastny, the fact the Blues didn’t have to compete with playoff baseball in St. Louis like they did last year and in previous years was a big help. It’s safe to say that ratings on Saturday won’t be quite as impressive when the Blues battle the Calgary Flames at approximately the same time the Cardinals begin their series with the Giants.
