In a report which should surely send Blues fans into a frenzy, the St. Louis Blues have “reached out” to the Colorado Avalanche about Paul Stastny. Feel free to debate and speculate over what that exactly means, but the Blues have formally talked to the Avs about a player Blues fans would love to see in St. Louis.

Stastny appeared destined to stay in Colorado after expressing his desire to be with the Avs, but some interesting contract negotiations (read: Colorado likes to hold out) have led to Stastny reportedly checking out other offers. Coming off a five-year, $33 million contract, Stastny should fetch a big price if he was to explore free agency.
The Blues have always seemed like a solid team for Stastny as his father skated with the Blues and later served as a scout for the team. Paul was born in Quebec, but attended high school in St. Louis at Chaminade. He was only in school for two years as he left to play with the Tier III Junior B St. Louis Blues.
If you’re going to make a Stastny vs. Spezza comparison, Stastny is younger and might be the better fit. Both men are extremely expensive, but Stastny may come at a cheaper overall cost as Spezza would require a trade involving multiple pieces.
