UPDATE:
It looks like Mueller didn’t want to report to the AHL. This would explain the move to terminate his contract. It seemed a bit puzzling the Blues would cut him entirely given his potential upside, but if he doesn’t want to report then there’s no sense in trying to force him.

EARLIER STORY:
When the Blues signed Peter Mueller to a one-year, two-way contract back in July, it looked like a steal. Mueller was the definition of a low risk, high reward signing which could prove to be the team’s secret weapon. Unfortunately, it looks like Mueller didn’t have much to offer as the Blues have placed him on waivers with the intention of terminating his contract.

Thus ends the Mueller era in St. Louis. At the time, it seemed like there was a decent chance Mueller could crack the NHL roster. As time wore on, it became apparent he was AHL bound. Now, in a surprising move, the Blues have revealed they don’t even want him in their AHL ranks.
Was Mueller really that bad in camp and during the preseason? Maybe, but this may speak to the fact the Blues have way more depth than they originally envisioned due to the emergence of several younger skaters. Mueller may have something to offer, but the Blues would rather give another player a shot in his place. Still, the cut probably won’t be taken well with Blues fans who feel he’s an upgrade over the current fourth line.
