And then there was one. The Blues have signed Magnus Paajarvi to a two-year contract, leaving Alex Pietrangelo as the lone player needing a new contract. Paajarvi's hit against the cap will be $1.2 million a season, as reported by Jeremy Rutherford.
The contract for Paajarvi puts the finishing touches on the David Perron trade. Paajarvi's $1.2 million cap hit will save the Blues just over $2.6 million a season when compared to Perron's hit of $3,812,500 a season.
This contract falls mostly in line with what I was expecting. In fact, it actually comes in a bit cheaper than what I was expecting. Paajarvi's cap hit in 2012-13 was $1.525 million. It was assumed that Paajarvi's new deal would be in the same ballpark as his old one, but it wouldn't exceed it. The Blues were able to lock him in for an average cap hit of $1.2 million a year, a number which is a bit further away from his old deal than I would have expected.
Paajarvi's new deal reflects the fact he still has plenty to prove in the NHL. He scored 16 points in 42 games with the Oilers last year, but the Blues believe he's capable of more.
