The Columbus Blue Jackets have reached a two-year contract extension with Boone Jenner. Jenner, 22, is having the best season of his career, and has already emerged as a top-line option for the Jackets. Jenner currently sits fifth on the team in points, with 22 goals and 13 assists. Another important note is that after a couple of bumpy seasons with injuries, Jenner has played in every game this season.
The deal for Jenner has an AAV of 2.9 million, a number the Coach pretty much nailed in his trade deadline preview. It also gives the Blue Jackets some time to determine what they would like to do with the core of this team or, more importantly, determine who exactly fits as the core. Jenner looks to be a cornerstone for the team and has stepped up in a big way since Ryan Johansen was dealt.

Jenner fits right in with the production of a few of these players. Some of those players have played their way into bigger deals, while others have only been middling. The Jackets are going to use this as a time to watch and see how Jenner develops, basically daring him to outperform his contract, much like Kuznetsov.
The Jackets do have some more RFAs to deal with – most notably Seth Jones – so getting Boone locked up to a team-friendly deal certainly gives some more clarity and stability to what next year’s salary cap situation will look like.
