Clint Hurdle has gone out of his way to already proclaim NRIs Joe Beimel and Jose Veras as part of his bullpen for 2011, which means that the drama around who makes the roster and who doesn’t will be pretty minimal. Unless Charlie Morton is terrible, he’ll likely make the club as he’s out of options. He and Scott Olsen will probably compete for the fifth rotation spot and the loser (Olsen, both because he’s not as talented as Morton and because he could function as a decent lefty in the bullpen) will end up in the bullpen.
That means that the biggest battles this spring, besides for the final position player roster spot, may be between the Chris Lerouxes and Aaron Thompsons of the world to see who stays on the roster when room needs to be cleared for Beimel and Veras. Spring training is five days old and I’m already ready for some real baseball.
