At first glance, the A.L. East division leading Toronto Blue Jays were less than impressive. Tim Wakefield, however, couldn’t have been more so.
Wakefield (5-2) stymied Toronto over 8 innings allowing just one run on five hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
His only blemish, a solo-homer to former Red Sox player Kevin Millar in the fifth.
Boston scored their only runs in the second on a Jeff Bailey RBI single to center and a George Kottaras sacrifice fly to left field.
Jonathan Papelbon completed his 11th save of the season in 1-2-3 fashion in the ninth.
Stars of the Game – Wakefield
I can’t go with three here. Wakefield was the star of this game hands down.
Next Game – 5/20 vs. Toronto Blue Jays – Brett Cecil/Brad Penny
After a solid performance from Wakefield, Penny has to follow suit. Also, the fans tonight were incredible in regards to cheering on Big Papi. In his last at-bat, at least in my section and others in the bleachers, everyone stood up during the AB and cheered and clapped. Clearly, Boston fans want him to return to his old form.
