AmalieArenaatdusk

Summer may be a time for relaxing and soaking up rays but hockey never really stops. A number of Lightning players are involved with the game around the world and we wanted to catch you up on what the boys are up to. The Bolts may be on break but they’re definitely staying busy!

Tyler Johnson was one of the banner guests at Hockey Fest in Coeur d’Alene Idaho last week.  Near his hometown of Spokane, Tyler hosted a skills clinic for youth players as part of the event. Johnson played youth hockey for the Coeur d’Alene Lakers and wants to show other local kids that there’s an option to play hockey in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. The broken wrist sustained in the Stanley Cup playoffs prevented Tyler from playing in the NHL Legends Game on Friday. That didn’t stop him from acting as a “coach”. Some other participants in the fundraising game were Wayne Gretzky, Guy Carbonneau, and this year’s Art Ross winner Jamie Benn.

Victor Hedman was awarded the prestigious Gold Puck award in his home country. This is the first time an NHLer has been honored with the award which recognizes the best Swedish hockey player. Hedman may have missed out on being recognized for his play at the NHL awards due to an early season injury but people are paying attention. He was widely praised by teammates, media, and opponents during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Brian Boyle headed home to his native Massachusetts for a few great reasons: his newborn son Declan’s christening, spending time with his very large family, and take part in the Comm Ave Charity Classic. The game capitalized on the intense rivalry between Boston College and Boston University to raise funds for Compassionate Care ALS. The team rosters were full of alumni that spanned generations: Ray Bourque, Brian Leetch, Chris Kreider, and Johnny Gaudreau to name a few. An alumni of BC, Boyle is still recovering from the deep playoff run and was unable to play. That didn’t stop him from being on hand as a “coach” and signing autographs for fans from the bench. Boyle attended in support of his good friend Pete Frates, the creator of the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Valtteri Filppula had a rather well known tennis partner in his native Finland.
