The Tampa Bay Lightning opened their doors for the 12th Annual Hockey ‘N Heels event on Thursday March 19th. The evening is designed specifically for female fans interested in learning more about the game of hockey and the behind the scenes workings of Amalie Arena. It’s a great opportunity to interact with media personalities, coaches, trainers and players.

After arriving at the arena we were split into groups based on different colored wrist bands. We were assigned two staff members who guided us on our journey to six stations around the arena. For the first time we were able to visit the Lightning Vision control room. It was filled with so many screens, switchboards and technology it’s staggering. So many people work incredibly hard to make our game day experience top notch and the fans never even see them.

Bobby “The Chief” Taylor was on hand to show us around the press box, radio and television booths. Another new station saw us spend some time with Ice Operations Manager Tom Miracle and the Zambonis.

Defenseman Andrej Sustr was out on the ice giving instructions on shooting the puck. The goal horn was silent, but it was pretty neat to have the flashing red lights and goal graphics on all the screens when my shot made it in. Head Coach Jon Cooper even made a surprise appearance and was happy to chat and take photos. Jason Garrison was stationed with assistant athletic trainer Mike Poirier. They showed us around the trainer’s room, the hot and cold tubs and the weight room. Brenden Morrow and video coach Nigel Kirwan gave us a tour of the players lounge and locker room.

This event is always a great opportunity to learn something new and ask questions you don’t normally have the opportunity to ask. It’s not dumbed down or demeaning. We’re treated like hockey fans and that’s probably the best thing of all.
