With the purposed bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. off the table, MMA looks to gain a stronger hold on its fans. Some critics and fans seem to think that this match needs to happen to save boxing, but let’s be honest boxing will always be around. Right now boxing is being carried by its two major superstars Pacquiao and Mayweather, while many young talents are slowly building their way up. But, in a world where it’s now, now, now; boxing is showing its age and is losing a generation of fans.
Boxing has no governing power, meaning no commission or official league, so boxers are with different promotions leaving it up to the promoters to co-promote and try to work a deal out. MMA has different promotions; but the main promotion, UFC, refuses to co-promote with any other company. But many of their athletes are the top of the cream, making it easier for them to do a super fight whenever they want. The UFC listens to its fans and brings the fights they want; boxing in the past three years has failed on all counts to do this.
This fight has been close to being done twice in the past year. The first time it did not go through was due to Pacquiao not agreeing with the Olympic style drug testing. The second time was due to disputes in the contract leaving Mayweather walking away and Top Rank imposing a time limit for him to sign on to fight.
As the time limit came and went Pacquiao has a new opponent in Antonio Margarito, yes the Margarito that was busted for putting on a hardening substance on his hand wraps. As a result of his actions the site of the fight has not been determined; if he could get licensed then it would be in Las Vegas if not it’s looking like Monterrey, Mexico. Some investors from United Arab Emirates want to hold the event in Abu Dhabi. Right now there are no fights planned for Floyd Mayweather.
The era of the super fight is far from over in boxing, but right now it’s at a stall point with everyone waiting for Pacquiao v. Mayweather. MMA gives people there monies worth, even when a fighter does not live up to par on a fight they find a way to make it up. These two fighters need to square everything away and give the fans what they want.
