Boxscore Breakdown #26: Solo – Mariners 3, Angels 2

flamelvs

It was fitting that on May the Fourth be with you Day, this game would feature nothing but Solo shots. Like Han, the Mariners shot first and won the shootout. The Angels had a shot at dethroning the King to defeat the Empire, but Collin Cowgill‘s light speed drive failed him on his game-ending stolen base attempt.

The problem is that the Halos kept screwing it all up. Calhoun grounded into a double play and Mike Trout got doubled off on a Pujols line drive. The only actual production they got was Matt Joyce who FINALLY got a hold of one. Go figure that he doesn’t hit anyone all season and then hits a homer off King Felix. Freese would add a home of his own to make thing interesting, but it got uninteresting real quick once Collin Cowgill got caught stealing to end the game.

The problem is that pesky seventh and eighth inning. As frustrating as it was to see Shoe give up those dingers, this is an overall encouraging step forward for him.

Bullpen Battle

Neither team ever really got runners on and threatened to score over a sustained period.

Sorry, Kole, but that GIDP and striking out in the first with a runner on base went a long way towards short-circuiting what little offense the Halos managed to muster.
