Boxscore Breakdown #46: Less than zero – Padres 4, Angels 0

What’s the only thing worse than a typical shutout? Getting shutout in extra innings. It is a shutout plus some. It is an exaggerated display of your own incompetence. You’ve been given extra opportunities to get on the board and yet you still fail. It is the salt in an already open and festering wound. It is the Angels offense.

It hasn’t taken so far, but maybe the fifth time is the charm. Everyone else was terrible and useless, even Albert. There is a reason nobody was on the positive side of the axis, after all.

Will Venable had a solid night at the plate, but his biggest contribution was saving the game with a home run robbery of Mike Trout. Will Venable: hater of greatness.

Thank goodness, because it would’ve been really awkward if he pitched poorly on his own bobblehead night. One might have to discount the start a little bit though given that it came against an offense that rivals the Angels for ineptitude. Speaking of which, the Halos offense made Odrisamer Despaigne look quite good in his own right despite him entering the game with an ERA on par with Shoemaker’s.

Bullpen Battle

One can’t help but wonder if pitching the next night after going two innings for the first time all season was too physically taxing for him. The Padres bullpen stepped their game up and no-hit the Halos for four innings.

Smith would be the easy choice, but I refuse to blame him for getting forced into a bad situation by an inept offense. No the honor goes to David Freese who had two of the best chances to put the Angels on the board and he failed both times.
