Boxscore Breakdown #61: Bobble this – Angels 5, Athletics 4

Barnes Clan

It should be Kole Calhoun Bobblehead Night every night. This whole move to the clean-up spot hasn’t been working out so great for Kole so far, but it worked like a charm last night as he basically won the game for the Halos twice. First, there was a go-ahead double that would’ve won the game if Fernando Salas hadn’t screwed it all up. Not to have his hard work undone, Kole ensured that he got to be the hero on his own giveaway night by cranking a tie-breaking solo shot into the stands so that it could be wrestled over by the two factions of fans that tried to name the section after Calhoun. (neither with good names, but it is the thought that counts, right?) So much heroics and all because of a silly collectible.

I’m sure he didn’t mean any offense. It’s not his fault Oakland couldn’t get him out. Kyle Kubitza got what might be his last start at third for a bit and went out on a down note. He might still get to hang around and do some DHing or to fumble around in left field, but he’ll probably be on a pretty short leash.

Lawrie and Phegley had the homers on the day while Billy Butler inexplicably argued strike calls down the middle.

Chavez cruised early on before the Angels finally got to him. Hector Santiago didn’t last as long as Chavez, but he seemed to be in control. It wasn’t his best line on the year, but he really only had the one bad inning where he coughed up the back-to-back homers.

Evan Scribner picked a bad day just to show up to work.
