Boxscore Breakdown #68: Gray skies turned red – Angels 12, Athletics 7

When you go down by five runs to Sonny Gray, you aren’t supposed to come back. That’s basically a death sentence, especially with an offense like that of the Angels. Yet, some way, somehow, the Angels turned everything Gray to Halo Red in one incredible half inning. Could this be a turning point on their season? Maybe, but we’ve been fooled before. But maybe this time it will actually be for real.

Even with the bases loaded, you have to wonder about the wisdom of pitching to him. Johnny Giavotella also had a big day, just not quite as showy of one. He also seemed to upset Kole Calhoun somehow, but maybe it was just Kole taking his bad day out on Johnny. Can’t we all just get along?

Ben Zobrist killed the Angels in this one as well, but he gave some back when he muffed that liner from Trout. In fact, Oakland’e poor fielding in general was a big reason the Halos made their comeback.

Sonny Gray was as unhittable as ever for the first six innings, then he just completely lost the zone in the seventh to let the Angels begin mounting their rally.

Bullpen Battle

Edward Mujica coming in to face Trout and Pujols was just a bad idea from the start, not that I’m complaining. For the Halos, apparently Trevor Gott is the new seventh inning guy already. Well, at least for this week.

By the time the top of the seventh was over, they were at 89%. That’s a pretty sweet turnaround.
