Once again, the Angels had a chance to get over the .500 hump. Once again they failed thanks in large part to Max Scherzer playing the role of the boulder to the Angels’ Sisyphus.
Run Expectancy Rundown
I’m still trying to figure out how it is we came to live in a world where J.B. Shuck can take Max Scherzer deep yet no other Angel can even touch him. I don’t like this world, especially the part where Mike Trout ends up wearing a golden sombrero.
The Halos took care of Torii and Kinsley, but they completel failed at shutting down Victor Martinez, who was just a nightmare all game long.
Starting Pitcher Scores
None of this comes as a surprise as C.J. Wilson has long struggled against the Tigers and Max Scherzer won the Cy Young for a reason last season.
Bullpen Battle
When I predicted a sweep for this series, I did so assuming the Tiger bullpen would gag this game away. Aside from Pujols getting a cheap solo shot off of Nathan, that didn’t really happen. On the Angels’ side of the ledger, at least Josh Wall was able to get three outs this time out.
Game Flow
The solo shot from Shuck gave the Angels an early edge, but Castellanos took care of that in short order. From there on out it was a slow bleed to the Angels’ ultimate demise.
Halo A-Hole
I never thought I’d see the day where Trout earned this dishonor, but if the Angels were going to beat Scherzer, they were going to need Trout to lead the way. He failed miserably at that task.
