New York Jets receiver Brandon Marshall will play against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for the first time since his three-touchdown game in 2014 as a member of the Chicago Bears, a game he barely remembers because of pain pills.
Marshall told reporters via conference call Wednesday that he doesn’t remember one of the best games of his 11-year career because pain pills he took for an ankle injury clouded his memory.
“I don’t really remember much about that game because I worked really hard to get back from a high ankle — well, I don’t want to go there. Um, well, I’ll say it: I took a couple pain pills. I took a couple pain pills that masked the pain. I really wasn’t supposed to play. I came back from a high ankle within 10 days. I was supposed to be out four to six weeks. I don’t really remember much about that game. I just remember catching those balls and that was pretty much it,” Marshall said, via Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith.
Marshall had five catches for 48 yards and three touchdowns to help the Bears beat 49ers 28-20 in Week 2 of the 2014 season.
That pain pills prescribed by team doctors could erase a player’s memory is frightening. NFL players have enough to deal with as it is with concussions and the long-term effects, which is probably why marijuana is being viewed as a safer alternative to painkillers despite the league’s policy against it.
