Braxton Berrios a test of the recruiting power of the football Death Star

Enter Braxton Berrios as he lands into Eugene this weekend with Arrion Springs. After watching his highlight film your heart will race every bit as fast as his feet break ankles of secondaries.

Little Big Man: Four-star slot receiver prospect Braxton “Honeynut” Berrios comes to Oregon this weekend for an official visit. He’s a unique combination of speed and toughness in a compact package (Robert Willett, Raleigh News-Observer photo).

His cuts are explosive and he brings an intensity I haven’t seen in quite a while. Yes he is small standing at 5’10 180 pounds but DAT is just as small if not smaller RIGHT NOW. Last season as a junior at Raleigh in North Carolina (very competitive state), Berrios had 760 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns and also rushed for 1,142 yards and 23 touchdowns.

When you watch his tape you see a guy determined to outwork everyone on the field and he chirps a whole lot but don’t let that fool you. He had a 4.3 GPA last year and he has the attributes to make spread schemes hum like a well-oiled machine. I know, what you’re thinking the Cam Newton celebrations are a little bit excessive but you have to love his competitive drive.

The obvious comparison is Wes Welker but last I checked Welker didn’t have a 37-inch vert and 180 pound frame coming out of high school. He plays in a very competitive state and every spread team under the sun in the country is recruiting him hard. But this weekend he has the luxury of watching the Ducks try to put up triple digits on Saturday and finally use the death star to bring him to the dark side.

Looking at his twitter account he seems pretty excited and Arrion Springs has been on him about committing. This will be the first weekend the Ducks get to see what their brand new facilities can do in literally the blink of an eye. I suspect when recruits come here the facilities will tip in our favor before they even step foot inside the massive complex.

Berrios is also in a very unique situation. I would imagine Helfrich and friends want him at the TAZR position that vaulted DAT into the spotlight and this kid has the potential to start right away. He inhales passes and his cut backs make pencils break as if Joe Theismann entered the room. We all know the star system means nothing, but I’m really high on this kid’s potential to produce at the next level despite how small he is. Just take a look at how he performed at The Opening and how jacked up he gets everyone around him when he competes.

He brings a little extra cockiness, which I think the Ducks need to be honest. If we land this guy, which I suspect will happen this weekend, consider the TAZR position filled after DAT leaves this year. Oh yeah I forgot to mention, this thing called Oregon football starts today! #GODUCKS
