Braxton Miller re-injured his throwing shoulder at practice on Monday and the word on the street is that he will miss the 2014 season. Miller is one of the top players in college football and one of the front-runners for the Heisman Trophy. Can Ohio State survive life without Braxton?
Last season Miller missed some time and Kenny Guiton filled in admirably but Guiton was a senior. Miller’s back-up situation is much more in question this season.
Ohio State was the odds on favorite to win the Big Ten and was a favorite to make the college football playoff. Vegas has already moved to downgrade the Buckeyes shot at a National Championship and has now made Wisconsin and Michigan State favorites over Ohio State to win the Big Ten Championship.
A couple things to keep in mind….
Ohio State’s schedule isn’t that tough. Yes, there are some games that could get interesting (Navy, Virginia Tech, Cincy) but they also don’t play two of the best teams in the Big Ten (Nebraska and Wisconsin) and they don’t have to play Michigan State until the beginning of November. The schedule is workable.
Love him or hate him, Urban Meyer is a winner. Only one time over his past five seasons has a Meyer coached program that won less than 12 games (his 2010 swan song at Florida). Simply put, Meyer knows how to win and I don’t expect anything less from this Ohio State team.
Should we downgrade the Buckeyes in light of the news about Miller? I think you have to but I also think that if you are righting off the Buckeyes then you might need to re-think things a bit.
