Breaking: Clarke MacArthur Inks 5-year Extension

Boom!

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has revealed that Clarke MacArthur, one of the team’s heralded veteran forwards who was slated to his unrestricted free agency in 2015, has signed a five-year contract extension to remain with the organization. Sorry Hfboards, you’ll have to settle for having depth player signings broken by the Senators on your message board.

MacArthur’s in the last year of his current that will pay him $3.25 million. The 28-year old left winger will earn $4.5 million in the first two years of his extension before earning $4.75 million in the final three years.

By my math, MacArthur will turn 34 in April of the last year of his contract and all things considered, it’s pretty impressive that the Senators were able to get this top six forward to a contract that’s worth less than an average of $5 million per annum.

Last season he set a career high for regular season goals with 24 and his 55 points represented the second highest total of his career. His chemistry with Kyle Turris was unmistakable, but now that line will be under pressure to replicate last season’s success now that they will be matched up against the opposition’s best forwards and best defensive pairings.

Underlying fancy stats that Steve Simmons hates have shown Clarke MacArthur to be pretty effective throughout his career. He’s always tended to have a great positive effect on puck possession and having watched him first-hand last season, he’s a responsible two-way forward who busts his ass in every zone on the ice.

Bryan Murray will reportedly speak to the media in short order to discuss the MacArthur signing.
