The Brewers put reliever Elmer Dessens on the 15-day DL and called up third-baseman Ryan Braun.
The move came as a surprise, as the Brewers were widely expected to wait until June to call up Braun, to avoid him becoming a “Super 2.” The move was likely made to add some power out of the the third-baseman position. No word yet as to whether Braun will start Friday evening in San Diego and where he’ll bat in the batting order.
I can’t help but wonder if the call-up is temporary, however, as Ned Yost almost always wants a 12-man pitching staff…and with Sheets having a blister and likely missing at least one start, it looks like Carlos Villanueva will be moved into the rotation on Tuesday…which leaves only Wise, Turnbow, Spurling, and Shouse as middle relievers for both the Padres’ and Braves’ series…for Super 2 service time, it only counts games on the roster, right? They could send him down after this weekend for another reliever, and it would only count as 3 games. For him to be added permanently to the IF, Doug Melvin is going to have to move an OF or Tony Graffanino. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.
