BREAKING NEWS: Brewers release Claudio Vargas

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com’s story
JSOnline.com’s Tom Haudricourt’s take on it
Wow…neither McCalvy, Haudricourt, Vargas, or myself saw that coming. Vargas had a killer spring, and is under contract for $3.6 million or so. But with Bush needing to clear waivers (and likely to be claimed, as he is somewhat more affordable at $2.5 million), and the desire to go with all three of their young guns this season (Gallardo, Parra, and Villanueva), Vargas became the odd man out.
Haudricourt reported that Yost will reveal his initial rotation late Tuesday, but that Parra could move up to the #3 spot, with Bush and Villanueva rounding out the last two spots, at least until Gallardo returns.
On one hand, it is very nice to see Doug Melvin ready to commit to giving the young talent a chance to prove themselves…hopefully, Parra and Villanueva will do well enough in the first few weeks of the season to warrant Gallardo replacing Bush.
I’m stunned…Melvin is sure acting like this is a “win now or die trying” year for him and Yost.
