CBS has made a splash in the middle of the Olympics, signing a 15 year contract extension to carry Southeastern Conference football and basketball games.
The deal also includes digital rights, meaning CBS can webcast the games. Under the contract, CBS will continue the SEC Game of the Week during football season as well carry primetime games and doubleheaders in certain weeks.
Tony Barnhart of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the new contract which is believed to be the longest in college sports history, gives CBS the first pick of games every week. Previously, CBS and ESPN would take turns throughout the season.
Christopher Byrne of the Eye on Sports Media blog says the contract also provides for coverage of college basketball.
The new deal starts next season and now the SEC can concentrate on its other agreements with ESPN and Raycom. Still on the table is the possibility of the SEC taking games in-house with its own network.
