First of all, I need to acknowledge my own mistake in underestimating Northwestern. The Wildcats led Missouri most of the game before falling in overtime last night, 30-23. NW shocked a lot of people with that, especially me.
I had predicted a blowout (I think I said 61-21) by Missouri’s potent offense, and I apologize to all Cats fans for my doubt.
I didn’t get to pay close attention to the game until after halftime (when I got home from work), and my excitement for the Big Ten was quickly rained on by ESPN’s horrific coverage of the game. If you watched the game, you know exactly what I’m talking about. You would have thought that Jesus Christ was on the field, playing in his last game.
After EVERY play, ESPN cameras cut to Chase Daniel’s parents in their seats. I’m not kidding, every single play. And the worst part about it was that their expressions NEVER changed. There was literally no point to constantly show these people…they were by far less exciting to watch than any small group of people in the stands.
It got so bad, that ESPN actually showed a REPLAY of the Daniel family. Again, I’m not kidding.
I understand that it was an important day in Missouri football and the Daniel family. Show the ‘rents, because it’s a nice personal story for the TV audience. But for the love of God…..not on EVERY play!
ESPN’s persistence on this family showed a total lack of respect for the thousands of Northwestern fans in the stadium. I’m willing to bet some of them had kids playing in their last football game, too.
