In an off-season of looking for outfielders and pitching that is major-league ready, Doug Melvin might have missed a couple right under his nose. The Brewers lost reliever R.A. Dickey (15th pick) to the Seattle Mariners and infielder/outfielder Callix Crabbe (41st pick) to the San Diego Padres in the major-league phase of the Rule 5 draft Thursday. Both the Mariners and Padres will have to keep Dickey and Crabbe, respectively, on their 25-man for the entire season, or offer to send them back to Milwaukee. The Brewers picked up Joe Bateman and Richard Campbell in the AAA phase, and will need to add both to Nashville’s roster, effectively taking Dickey’s and Crabbe’s spots. Bateman, a reliever, was 4-1, 2.88, for the Connecticut Defenders in the Eastern League. Addendum: The Brewers also added pitcher Juan Sandoval, a third AA relief pitcher, according to Jim Street of MLB.com. Correction: Dickey technically had already left the Brewers prior to the draft as a minor-league UFA and was signed by the Twins but left off their 40-man. Dickey last pitched for the Brewers’ AAA affiliate, Nashville.
