Adam McCalvy of mlb.com reported that infielder Tony Graffanino’s MRI Thursday revealed Graffy will need surgery to repair a torn ACL, and will miss the remainder of the 2007 season.
My 2¢: Not only will this weigh on the minds of the other Brewers’ players, but this means a whole lot less flexibility in terms of pinch-hitting and replacements at 2B, SS, 3B and even the OF. Rickie Weeks will be called up to resume playing second base, and will likely platoon with Counsell and/or Joe Dillon. Dillon is the true beneficiary, as Weeks likely would have been called up to replace Dillon at the end of the month, so Weeks would be eligible for the post-season. Now Dillon will likely be on the playoff roster. It may also mean, ironically, that Graffanino may be back with the Brewers in ’08–before the injury, Graffanino stood a fair chance of getting a multi-year deal to start for someone…sadly, his market value may be such that the Brewers will be able to re-sign him to a one-year deal for next season.
