Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union has broken the news that tonight’s season ender for Inside the NFL on HBO will mark the end of the excellent series.
The show began as a highlight show and used footage from NFL Films. However, with programming from the NFL Network, ESPN’s NFL Primetime and now, NBC’s Football Night in America, the show has almost been rendered obsolete. However, in recent years, the show tried to use different angles in showing highlights like showing the games from a fan’s, former player’s or injured player’s perspective.
In addition, the show became more of a newsgathering operation when Bob Costas and Peter King joined the roster.
Nick Buoniconti and Len Dawson were the long-time hosts and were replaced in 2002 by Costas. But the format has mostly remained the same from its premiere in 1977 until today.
There’s no reason as to why the show is ending now, but Dougherty speculates that perhaps a similar show could end up on the NFL Network.
Rich Heldenfels of the Akron Beacon Journal has the official tersely worded press release from HBO Sports.
The show will be missed.
