Multiple sources are reporting that the University of Michigan has hired Brady Hoke as the nineteenth coach of it’s football program.
Michigan fans are excited and overwhelmed, I’m sure.
A Kettering Ohio native, Hoke played for the Ball State Cardinals before becoming an assistant coach at Western Michigan, Toledo, Oregon State, and finally Michigan. It was during his tenure in Ann Arbor that he was under the tutelage of Lloyd Carr, and was coach Carr’s defensive line coach.
Hoke left Michigan to return to his Alma Mater, and led the Ball State Cardinals to a 12-0 regular season record before losing the conference title game. Ball State finished in the top 25 for the first time in school history that season.
Hoke has been the coach at San Diego State University for the past two years, and has revived a program that had fallen a bit in terms of national prestige. He was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2010, in spite of not winning a conference championship
A former defensive lineman, he brings the defensive mindset that AD Brandon mentioned in his initial press conference. This rollercoaster of a search process has now concluded, apparently, having seen candidate A) Jim Harbaugh and B) Les Miles both spurn the Wolverines.
Initial plans were to have Les Miles announced and present for the Ohio State/Michigan basketball game tomorrow, in an attempt to mimic the Tressel hire. It has yet to be seen if Coach Hoke will be able to coordinate a similar halftime appearance. Update: The presser is for tomorrow morning, so I’m pretty sure the “anything you can do, we can try to” halftime festivities are on.
