John Ourand and Eric Fisher report that the San Diego Padres will become the second MLB team within a week to announce that they will stream games online in the local market. Earlier this week, the Yankees released plans to stream games through Cablevision for $49.95 for the rest of the season.
John and Eric write:
A second in-market streaming deal set to be announced this week involves the San Diego Padres and Cox Communications, according to industry sources.
In addition, the story says MLB Walking, Talking Conflict of Interest Bud Selig has sent a memo to all of the 30 teams outlining the plans to divide the money between each organizations, their regional sports networks and the main cable provider in the market.
John and Eric add:
Other teams do not appear to be close to deals for in-market streaming on the heels of the Yankees and Padres, but MLB President Bob DuPuy last week said while announcing the Yankees’ deal that he expects “a majority” of teams will have such deals in place sometime next season.
Certainly big news and once again, MLB remains on the forefront of online streaming having been the first league to put its games online out of market. Now, it’s doing it in-market.
