JSOnline.com just reported that the Brewers have designated reliever Derrick Turnbow for assignment.
Infielder Joe Dillon was recalled from AAA Nashville and will join the club in Houston Friday evening.
Turnbow’s designation was widely expected after his awful performance in Chicago Wednesday evening. The former closer, Turnbow made the NL All-Star team back in 2006, but struggled ever since his appearance, eventually losing the closing job to Francisco Cordero later that year after Cordero was acquired in a trade with the Rangers.
Turnbow can refuse the assignment to AAA Nashville and become a free agent if a trade cannot be made, but he’d then forfeit over $2.5 million remaining on his ’08 MLB contract.
Obviously, the need for another pinch-hitter outweighed the need to keep Turnbow with the parent club to work out his control issues. Skipper Ned Yost has lost all confidence in Turnbow, and was only using him in mop up roles…a role that Turnbow expressed frustration and dissatisfaction with. Hopefully, another team will take a chance on Turnbow, or he can find his control in Nashville and re-join the Brewers with the September call-ups.
