Last night the MLS revealed their 2014 schedules. The Union have a tough start to the season opening up the season against two playoff teams, first in Portland then the home opener against New England. The MLS runs on a 34 game unbalanced schedule that sees each team all but two conference opponents 3 times and each western team once. Unfortunately the Union will only face the two worse teams in the east (DC United and Toronto FC) twice. On the plus side this year the Union have NYRB two times at home. Also the Union end the season playing the last 3 of 4 games at home.
The MLS will play close to half its season before taking a three week break for the world cup in June. Other notable schedule news is that the Union will be playing on the fourth of July against FC Dallas in Dallas. The Union will play the Red Bulls for the first time in NY on April 16th a week before they play MLS Cup contenders Real Salt Lake. In May the Union will be on the road to face both Seattle and LA Galaxy. 7 games will be broadcasted on national TV and the rest will be broadcasted locally in CSN and CN8. Although dates have been set times have yet to be announced.
Not much can be said about the Union schedule as the MLS season is still going on and the off season has yet to start. But regardless of what other teams do the ultimate expectation for this team is to make playoffs. The Unbalanced schedule has its ups and downs but every team has to deal with it.
